BIBLE TRANSLATION HELPER
Six Resources for
Multicultural Teams

1. TELL ME A STORY
Discover the power of stories to help us understand biblical words and themes. If you ask, the BT Helper will act as a storyteller for your team, recognizing that some concepts are better understood when embedded in the context of a story. Here’s how it works: 1. Request a story: Ask the TranslationHelper to tell you a story to help you understand a specific term, word, or concept from the Bible that you find challenging. 2. Engage with the story: Listen to the story and reflect on how it clarifies the term or concept for you. 3. Seek further clarification: If you still don't fully understand, ask the Translation Helper for more stories until the term is clear and you feel confident in how to translate it. Using storytelling, the BT Helper will guide you to a deeper understanding, making it easier for you to translate complex biblical terms and concepts accurately.

2. LET US TALK ABOUT IT
A good conversation will help you to grasp the meaning of lots of biblical texts. If you ask, the BT Helper will act as a knowledgeable friend and conversation partner who is well-versed in the Bible and Bible translation, much like an exegetical expert. Here’s how it works: 1. Ask questions: Inquire about specific biblical terms, passages, or concepts that you find challenging. 2. Share your thoughts: Discuss your interpretations or thoughts on various biblical topics. 3. Engage in discussions: Explore different topics related to Bible translation and receive insights from the BT Helper. 4. Request suggestions: Ask for advice on how to translate certain terms or passages more effectively. Treat the BT Helper as a facilitator that will help you think critically and creatively about how to translate the Bible into your target language more accurately and effectively.

3. GIVE ME AN ORAL VERSION
Experience biblical passages in oral format. If you ask, the BT Helper will serve as an oral performer of biblical texts in the language of wider communication, typically the national or bridge language. You can ask the Translation Helper to provide an oral version of a biblical passage or chapter. Listening to different styles of oral versions will help you consider various ways to express the same message, making you a better translator. Some versions that I create may not be considered full translations; they are meant to help you think creatively about how to convey the content of the passage. Here are some examples: 1. Provide an oral version of John 17 for young adults, such as college students. 2. Create a poetic oral version of Ruth 1. 3. Show me an oral version of the parable of the Good Samaritan that can be understood by children. 4. Give me a very enthusiastic oral version of Matthew 1:18-25 (the birth of Jesus). You can request various types of oral versions: more literal, more explanatory, more simplified, paraphrased, etc.

4. CHECK MY BACK TRANSLATION
Analyze a back translation of your draft against the original biblical texts. A back translation involves taking a text that has already been translated into the mother tongue and translating it back literally into the language of wider communication. This literal back translation is then used to check the quality of the translation in the mother tongue. This process helps ensure that the translation accurately conveys the intended meaning of the original text. If you ask, the BT Helper will act as a back translation checker, similar to the role of a consultant or facilitator. It will analyze your back translation for accuracy and fidelity to the intent of the original biblical texts and suggest changes when needed. Here’s how it works: 1. Submit your back translation: Provide the text you have translated back into the original language. 2. Receive feedback: The Translation Helper will review your back translation, checking for accuracy and ensuring that it aligns with the original intent of the biblical text. 3. Get suggestions: The Translation Helper will offer recommendations for improvements if necessary, helping you refine your translation for better accuracy and faithfulness to the original meaning.

5. SHOW ME AN IMAGE
Visualize the context of biblical passages. If you ask, the BT Helper will act as an artist or illustrator knowledgeable about the appearance of places, objects, and people in biblical times. Here’s how it works: 1. Request an illustration: Ask the Translation Helper to show you an image of a specific place, object, person, or any other element from the Bible that you find unclear. 2. View the illustration: Examine the provided image to gain a better understanding of the biblical element. 3. Seek further clarity: If needed, ask for additional illustrations or details to ensure you have a clear understanding. The BT Helper will help you visualize and comprehend various aspects of the Bible, enhancing your understanding and aiding in accurate translation.

6. RECOMMEND A VIDEO
Discover trustable videos that will help you understand the biblical themes deeper. If you ask, the BT Helper will act as a video curator, recommending trustworthy biblical videos. Here’s how it works: 1. Request a video: Ask the Translation Helper to recommend a video from the internet that will help you understand a specific passage, concept, or any other aspect of the Bible. 2. Watch the video: Use the provided link to view the video. If the link does not work when clicked, try copying and pasting it into your browser. 3. Seek further assistance: If needed, request additional video recommendations for more clarity. The BT Helper will guide you to valuable video resources, enhancing your understanding of biblical content.
